sunday picnic

The second-annual LGBT Picnic, presented by the Lesbian & Gay Community Center of Kansas City from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., provides a great opportunity for springtime pigging out in Swope Park. This year’s theme is “Unclique,” and promoter Chuck Brackett has no shortage of activities planned to get folks, well, clicking. The lineup includes group dancing led by the Sho-Me Squares, a tug-of-war sponsored by the KC Boys of Leather, and speaker John Coop to discuss the importance of community. “We’re excited to help rally the community as we head toward KC’s annual Pride celebration,” Brackett says. The event is free, and the LGCC provides food. “We do encourage folks to bring a side dish to share, and Halfy’s Thrift Boutique will be on hand accepting both cash and in-kind donations for their thrift shop, which benefits the Pet Connection no-kill animal shelter.” To get there, take Oldham south from Gregory and look for shelter No. 7.— Kenton Schuster
