Storm of Song

Shakespeare’s fantastical romantic comedy The Tempest has inspired dozens of unique contemporary adaptations, including the avant-garde film (if not the store) Prospero’s Books and the sci-fi musical Return to the Forbidden Planet. Paul Moravec’s Tempest Fantasy earned the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for music, and the composition for solo clarinet and piano trio ranks among the most acclaimed recent interpretations. In a Harry Potter-mad month, Tempest Fantasy spotlights another sorcerer, Prospero, who’s stranded on a desolate island after being exiled by his brother. Moravec’s whimsical compositions conjure unseen wonders; his sparkling melodies communicate the essence of magic. The Kansas City chamber ensemble Summerfest Concerts plays Tempest Fantasy at 7 tonight in White Recital Hall (4949 Cherry) and at 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church (1301 Holmes.) Tickets cost $25 ($10 for students). For more information, call 816-235-6222.
