Sting, Hippo Campus and P.O.S. lead a bouncy concert week
STING
The new 57th & 9th marks a welcome return to form for Sting, sufferer of such recent misfortunes as a Broadway flop and an unrequited lute fetish. But the album — named for the New York cross streets where the studio at which it was recorded is located — isn’t a nostalgic indulgence. It’s a brisk, 37-minute collection of snarling guitar riffs, energetic melodies and even a lovely folk ballad (“South on the Great North Road”). It feels like the man’s truest album in more than a decade, and we’re happier for it. Joe Sumner (one of Sting’s kids) and the Last Banoleros open on Thursday at the Uptown.
8 p.m. Thursday, February 16, at the Uptown, 3700 Broadway
HIPPO CAMPUS, MAGIC CITY HIPPIES
Hippo Campus is full of youth, full of bouncing, buoyant choruses and beats that have been dusted with the power to make you dance far longer than you’d planned. And the St. Paul, Minnesota, quartet is still blossoming in its adolescence: The band formed in 2013, when its members were still in high school, and has managed to garner some notable attention — enough to yield a contract with New York’s Grand Jury Records (and Transgressive in the U.K.) — without even having a full-length album. That’s all going to change on February 24, when a debut titled Landmark arrives. If you want to get hip to this buzz-worthy band before the bees swarm, get to RecordBar Friday night. Miami’s Magic City Hippies opens.
8 p.m. Friday, February 17, at RecordBar, 1520 Grand
P.O.S., CESCHI
It’s not enough to call P.O.S.’s Chill, Dummy a comeback. In 2014, after spending a year on dialysis, the 35-year-old Minneapolis rapper and Doomtree collective co-founder underwent a kidney transplant. The medical emergency meant that the nationwide tour in support of his acclaimed 2012 album, We Don’t Even Live Here, was canceled, and the three years after his transplant have largely been spent in recovery. It wasn’t until 2016 that he was finally able to get back in the studio to record what would eventually become his most personal record to date — one that more than makes up for the lost time. Friday, find P.O.S. back on his feet at the Riot Room. Hip-hop artist Ceschi opens.
