Stephen Reed guilty of second-degree murder in 16-year-old Ryder Spillman’s homicide

A Wyandotte County jury found Stephen Reed guilty today of shooting and killing 16-year-old Ryder Spillman.
Jurors returned the guilty verdict against Reed, 17, around 1 p.m., KMBC Channel 9 reported.
Stephen Reed was facing charges of first-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile, but jurors found him guilty of second-degree murder.
According to KMBC, Reed’s defense attorney, Carl Cornwall, argued that Stephen Reed was guilty of nothing more than involuntary manslaughter. Stephen Reed reportedly testified that he thought Spillman was armed and fired the gun in self-defense. Spillman wasn’t armed.
