Steely Dan, last night at Starlight
It’s a cliche, but people really do tend to love or hate Steely Dan. Some love the whole catalog, from the early rock stuff all the way through to the more jazz-inflected material. Haters despise their slick, precise studio sounds and see the band as too contrived and lacking spontaneity. But it is hard to overlook the sheer talent and musicianship that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have been assembling since the ’70s. Doubters might think that a sound like Steely Dan’s only exists in the studio, but as the audience at Starlight on Thursday found out, it certainly exists in its live shows as well.
