Standing North

Don Kottman’s paintings are on display — and viewable from the street — in BNIM’s storefront windows.
From the artist’s statement:
I build color painted spaces, flat paintings that struggle toward and contest their very existence in search of the paintings’ rhythm, necessity and reality. The principle energies I employ are: the color of color, eye travel, the ways of the paint, the spatial array, the Do, See, Do call/response engagement, gravity, the total four-sided event and the light and presence made. Recently, I’ve been structuring paintings with a stage-right/stage-left organic form, also a top-bottom sensibility where stage-center is a gravity poured void. My entire painting life has been a back and forth between figuration and abstraction. Today my work brings these forces together in an often, unconscious push/pull. As always, I paint what is in front of me with the big three realities: color, paint, surface-support; and a big fourth: space. All form the physical reality of my work where “visuality” is front and center.
