St. Joseph News-Press endorses Donald Trump, rejects decency
Two daily newspapers in the United States have endorsed Donald Trump. One of them is in Missouri.
The St. Joseph News-Press‘ endorsement of Trump is a right-wing fever dream evincing more hostility toward Hillary Clinton than confidence in Trump. The editorial casts Clinton as a villain “who has done so much over the last 30 years to abuse the public’s trust.” Evidence of her dastardliness includes her efforts to develop a plan to provide universal health care during Bill Clinton’s first term as president as well as the regular topics on Fox News opinion shows (Benghazi, emails, speaking fees).
As for the Republican nominee, the editorial kicks his unfitness for office under the crusty bearskin rug of one of his past sexual conquests. “No one will suggest Trump is without flaws and a personal history that is best left in the past,” the editorial states before extending no such page-turning courtesies to Clinton.
Trump, the editorial continues, is poised to lead the country because he’s a savvy businessman whose “successes far outweigh his failures.” Among the policy initiatives the News-Press welcomes are Trump’s proposed repeal of the estate tax and his willingness to address the “ills of the inner cities.”
As of this writing, the only other daily newspaper to endorse Trump is the Santa Barbara News-Press (no relation), which did not even try to elucidate its reasons.
With the Trump endorsement, the St. Joseph News-Press solidifies its reputation for providing trenchant commentary for people who aren’t as smart as they think they are. In September, the paper’s digital editor wrote a column, “Why I’ll Never Date a Feminist,” that brought out the ice picks.
