Specters of the Past

One reason that cemeteries seem so scary is that they contain elements of the unknown. The assemblage of faceless names and mysterious history has long relegated graveyards to the world of haunted houses and ghost stories, where the fading headstones offer great inscrutability but little in the way of tangible fact. Take the first step toward changing your opinion of these repositories of history by experiencing Historical Epitaphs: Voices From the Past at 7 tonight at Union Cemetery (227 East 28th Terrace). A tour guide will share the history of Union Cemetery, punctuated by actors playing the roles of deceased residents, both famous and unknown, at the sites of their interments. The interwoven narratives will offer a view of Kansas City rarely provided by the living. Free tours depart every 30 minutes until 9:30 p.m. For more information, call 816-225-8130 or see uchskc.org .
