Sorry, frugal travelers: No more nonstops from KC to Iceland

It was always rather amazing that Icelandair decided to offer direct flights from Kansas City to Iceland—the first nonstop flight to Europe in our little old airport’s history.

But the party is over. The airline announced today that it will be discontinuing flights from both KC and San Francisco “due to commercial reasons”—i.e., not enough people buying those flights. The last straight shot from KC apparently already occurred on September 15. Aviation director Pat Klein says the city is “disappointed” about the decision but that “aviation staff will continue to meet with airlines with the intent to grow Kansas City’s international access.”
