Sorry, Alamo Drafthouse, KC is getting known for cracking wise at the movies

Talking at the Alamo Drafthouse during a movie will earn you a ticket to the curb, but elsewhere in Kansas City, it’s helping keep the lights on. The Associated Press has a trend piece on “movie riffs,” comedians heckling cult classics before a live movie audience. And the exploits of two comedy troupes in Kansas City are front and center in the story. While those two groups are given the ignominious adjective of “obscure,” they are seen as part of the revival and nostalgia for Mystery Science Theater 3000 — a cult classic of its own from the early days of Comedy Central that featured a trio of talking heads hurling one-liners while outdated and poorly made films rolled on a movie screen.
The next “movie riff” in Kansas City is part of the Screenland Slam’s series. “I Know Who Killed Me” will be mocked at The Screenland Crown Center (2450 Grand, third floor) at 9 p.m. Saturday, October 6. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
