So Artsy Fartsy
Art-house films are great in theory, but the execution can sometimes leave the viewer longing for the screwball genius of Will Ferrell. That’s why the best place to view artsy flicks is in an actual house of art like the Spencer Museum of Art (1301 Mississippi in Lawrence, 785-864-4710). With sparse crowds and free admission, you and your beret-wearing date can pinch pennies — even if you have to pinch each other to stay awake. That shouldn’t be a problem, however, at today’s 6 p.m. screening of Woman in the Dunes. The 1964 masterwork of Japanese avant-garde filmmaker Hiroshi Teshigahara sports a tagline of “Haunting. Erotic. Unforgettable.” The absurd parable documents a traveling entomologist who becomes trapped in a sandpit with an enslaved woman who offers up her body in exchange for his servitude. A favorite of both Roger Ebert and Rotten Tomatoes, the flick should prove at least as entertaining as Semi-Pro and a heck of a lot more romantic.
