Snuff Jazz featuring Brian Haas
It’s about time something really freaky went down at the Blue Room. Evidently, Mark Southerland’s Snuff Jazz and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey pianist Brian Haas (pictured) are the ones to bring on the bizarre. For those not familiar with local saxman and instrument inventor Southerland, Snuff Jazz teams him with Arnie Young and Bill McKemy to run down less “out” sets of experimental jazz than Southerland’s other projects, so even Blue Room regulars may find something to dip into. As for Haas, when he mans the ivories solo, he can become every bit the sensitive explorer, like traditionalist Bill Evans. But considering both his John Medeskian key-slaughterings with Jacob Fred and his tendency to discuss the vibrating molecules of love on his Web site, Haas probably will get a little bent when paired with the Snuff.
