Skater Pride

The month of June is home to many an undignified day of celebration — World Sauntering Day (June 19), Pop Goes the Weasel Day (June 14) and National Chocolate Pudding Day (June 26). And someone has declared June to be National Accordion Awareness Month. In comparison, these questionable “celebrations” make Go Skateboarding Day — a national holiday that’s been marked every June 21 since 2004 — seem awfully distinguished. Skate-gear brand Etnies and the team from local shop Escapist Skateboards are marking the occasion with a big jam at the Penn Valley skatepark from noon until sundown. There will be food, drinks, limited-edition shirts for sale, and prizes to raffle off. Proceeds will help fund much-needed (and once-promised) lights at the skatepark. Plus, Red Bull is giving away $2,500 for the best trick. Not sure how to get there? See the skatepark directory at escapistskateboarding.com.
