Skank City

Open your eyes and look within. Are you satisfied with the life you’re livin’? Would a Friday-night reggae fix make things better? Of course, it would. So it’s fortunate that Patrick Brown and his Kansas City Reggae Uprising Fridays are in the house. Specifically, Brown’s event is on the patio at Californos (4124 Pennsylvania, 816-531-7878). Featuring one band and one DJ each Friday (through the second week of August), Brown and his partners, Mike Dunn and Richard Faught, showcase local as well as regional talent from Omaha, St. Louis and beyond. Bands such as Liv Stat, Jah Lion and Vibenhai pair up with such midtown staples as DJ Rico, Johnny2tone and DJ Richmo to let loose steamy beats and smokin’ grooves. Tonight, Brown (aka DJ Jabberock) teams with Dunn and Faught’s 77 Jefferson, kicking things off at 9 p.m. See kcruf.com for the summer lineup and more details on the upcoming third annual KC Reggae Uprising Festival. The cover is $5 for these 21-and-older shows.
