Single Sentence Singles: February 2024 edition

200622 Travislikesiflm Single Sentence Singles 36 Web

In an effort to keep you all abreast of the latest local music that’s not album or music video related, we present the latest installment of our irregular feature, Single Sentence Singles. We take a listen to the latest local singles to hit Soundcloud, Spotify, Bandcamp, et al, and sum them up in one sentence.

Elexa Dawson, “Answer”

The second single from Dawson’s new album, Wanderlust, “Answer,” sees the Flint Hills-based musician pairing with Oklahoma indie folk act Stanley Hotel to craft a dreamy bit of loping psych-folk which pairs nicely with introspection and microdosing.

Elexa Dawson performs at the Folk Alliance International conference, which runs Wednesday, February 21, through Sunday, February 25.

Milkdrop, “Inner Mono Log”

The first single from Milkdrop’s We’re All Adults Here, due out Friday, February 16, sees the Leavenworth rapper digging into that dad rap life, with the free-flowing thoughts and crackly piano recording coming dead smack in the middle of an album which “should probably cover morning school drop offs or your commute to and from work.”

Plains, “Shapes”

Call it post-rock, shoegaze, space rock, or whatever, this Lawrence trio knows how to channel a love of bands like Hum and Failure into an epic piece of instrumental music which seems as vast as the prairie from which the band takes its name.

Hothead Wave, “Here”

Hothead Wave’s frontwoman, Lizzy Cruz, hails from Lee’s Summit, and the debut release from her new project “is about a relationship dynamic where you don’t feel seen or heard,” with some really hooky intrumentation perfectly suited for bouncing around and singing along when you’re in an Olivia Rodrigo mood but need some raw edges.

Jeremy Nathan, “Linkedinfluencer”

“Relatable for anyone with dreams outside of a day job” and “dealing with the malaise that is the modern rat race,” says Nathan in an email about his new single, and if there were ever a song to make a split single with AJJ’s “Disposable Everything,” this would be it.

Jeremy Nathan performs at the Folk Alliance International conference as part of the Mammoth showcase on Thursday, February 22, at 11:00pm.

The Whips, “Begin Again”

Tracked entirely in the Whips’ band basement studio and it shows, says the band’s Max Indiveri, because “you can hear huge shout choruses and spur of the moment improv lines that can only be allowed to happen when the person hitting the record button is only a flight of stairs away from their bedroom,” and he’s right because this is a delightfully warm and intimate new track from the Lawrence funk rockers.

Tonsil, “TETHERBORN”

The guitar line is STELLAR, and the rest of it sounds like an English-language cover of an anime theme song, which may or may not be an awesome thing depending on yours likes or dislikes, but again, that guitar line is fucking stellar.
