Shooting Tips

TUE 7/22
Brian Gosewisch has shot animals with a gun and with a camera. He prefers the camera. Raised in the Midwest, Gosewisch excelled at hunting and fishing as a child but enjoyed observing more than killing. When he was fourteen, his mom bought him a Kodak disc camera, and he set out on a different sort of hunt.
“Anyone can kill an animal at a hundred yards with a scope, but to be able to get close enough to photograph an animal in the right light was a whole different challenge,” Gosewisch says on the Web site for Gosewisch Wild, his nature and wildlife photography business.
Gosewisch’s shutter-happy finger has paid off for him — his business provides stock nature photography to conservation agencies, book publishers, calendar companies and magazines in more than 150 countries. But Gosewisch is most proud that he documents only wild and free animals — or, if they’re born in captivity, they’re at least in nonstressful settings. “Our main goal is to show people the beauty of nature in all its forms and hopefully inspire them to respect and conserve what we have now for future generations.”
Gosewisch shares wildlife photography tips on equipment and technique at a free workshop at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Blue Springs South Library (2220 South 7 Highway). Call 816-229-3571 to register.— Sarah Smarsh
Lots of Foam
(Drunk) water-sport enthusiasts swap wild tales.
FRI 7/18
People who consider beer drinking a sport can get in some major practice while investigating a real athletic endeavor: white-water sports. Friday Night at the KC Paddler is the Kansas City Whitewater Club‘s chance to drink, eat and fabricate wild river stories. Seasoned boaters share pictures and get pumped about upcoming opportunities for thrashing through nature. The club takes road trips to white-water hot spots and practices on the Kaw rapids right outside of town. Though typically tame, the Kaw’s big holes, little holes, waves, chutes and jets entice kayakers, open boaters, canoeists and rafters. From 5 to 9 p.m., bring some beer to the Paddler (412-C Delaware in the River Market) to inquire about upcoming kayaking classes and more. For information, call 816-283-0800.— Smarsh
