Sexual Epiphanies

For When Did You Know?, a documentary in which local gays and lesbians recollect discovering their attraction to the not-opposite sex, Lisa Marie Evans had several sources from which to draw inspiration and material: Robert Trachtenberg’s 2005 anecdote collection, When I Knew, and the Cinemax documentary of the same name; radio footage on the topic culled from KKFI 90.1’s “The Tenth Voice”; and interviews conducted by Kansas City Gay and Lesbian Film Festival organizer Jamie Rich, Duncan Busser (Illegitimate Art and Design) and Evans herself. However, Evans remains unsure whether to tell her own “Eureka!” tale. “Sometimes I have a hard time being on camera,” she says. The subjects already slated for inclusion experienced “when I knew” moments at ages from 9 to 61, under circumstances that range from funny to shocking. “People enjoy telling their stories,” Evans says. “It’s odd in a certain way that you have to come to that knowledge, but it’s also a very expressive thing.” Queer-friendly artists Kristie Stremel and the Ssion contribute to the soundtrack.
