San Francisco label Orthlorng Musork has unleashed lots of bizarre experimental electronica into the world over the past few years. Its latest specimen, Babies That Hunt, takes to even more ridiculous realms the electro babbling of labelmates Blectum From Blechdom and the ADD digital pop of French trio DAT Politics. Secret Mommy (Vancouver producer Andy Dixon) imbues his music with the spirit of madcap comedy, but he’s not content merely to create novelty thrills. Dixon is just as concerned with exploring music-making software’s most extreme possibilities. Although some of Babies‘ eleven tracks possess a willfully wacky aura, most offer the sugared-up rush of a packed-to-capacity video-game parlor. For more serious-minded fans of intelligent dance music, Babies delivers absurdly disjointed, spasmelodic drill-and-bass compositions that make Squarepusher seem like a model of restraint. A zany, brainy dude who brings a prankster’s delight to the arena of laptop electronica, Secret Mommy turns that upside-down Apple logo into a demented smile.
