Second-Friday Stroll

In its latest exhibition, the YWCA swings from the political to the personal. Kathy Colon made her mark on the local art scene in 1999, on the sidewalk, with a 10-foot chalk portrait of herself and her twin sister at La Strada del Arte Festival. A decade later, Colon has had her work writ large in towering paintings at the Texas State Fair, and slipped in among the intimate expressions at the Gifted Hands shop in Crown Center. Colon’s reception from 5 to 8 tonight at the YWCA’s gallery (1017 North Sixth Street in Kansas City, Kansas) is just one of a dozen openings tied to KCK’s Second Friday Art Walk. It’s just a short wander from the YWCA to a multimedia affair at the Kaw Valley Arts and Humanities Gallery (756 Armstrong) or the new Imago Dei Arts Center, featuring new work by Bernice Williams, in the repurposed Granada Theatre (1015 Minnesota).
