The Associated Press is reporting that Scott Roeder, the man accused of killing Wichita abortion provider George Tiller, has confessed to the killing.
The AP’s Roxana Hegeman reports that Roeder made the confession in a phone call Monday, adding that he plans to use a “necessity defense,” claiming that he had to kill Tiller to protect the lives of unborn babies.
For months, rumors have spread that Roeder would claim “justifiable homicide” as part of his defense.
From the AP:
His confession comes as abortion opponents across the nation release a new “Defensive Action Statement” arguing for the same force to protect the unborn as is justified to protect born children. The 21 signers want jurors to be allowed to consider that defense at Roeder’s Jan. 11 trial.
Among the signers are Eric Rudolph, James Kopp and Shelley Shannon — all serving prison time for targeting abortion doctors.
A recent attempt at an eBay auction to raise money for Roeder’s defense said Roeder’s attorney would employ may be considering the “the Ne-cess-ity De-fense.”
The description for a Bible once owned by Shannon read:
There is real disagreement between God and America’s police and courts.
It is not over whether vio-lence is sometimes just-ified, but it is
over when it is just-ified.
EBay shut down the auction.
