While recording Peregrine, Tara Jane O’Neil isolated herself in her New York apartment, allowing a few musically inclined friends to assist her only if they played their parts without knowing where their contributions would fit into the finished product. O’Neil prolonged the sense of mystery by leaving some of her complex songs incomplete until the final day of recording and then wrapping up the loose ends with a spontaneous burst of inspiration. O’Neil displayed her skills with numerous instruments on Peregrine, but on tour she focuses solely on the guitar, letting such tourmates as Noel Hawley from Sonora Pine and Miggy from Ida handle the bass and drums, respectively. In a live setting, the songs on Peregrine should take a vastly different shape, because the lush keyboard-accented instrumentation of the recorded versions gives way to this trio’s relatively sparse renditions, which should further emphasize the intricacies of O’Neil’s striking yet delicate vocals. Bright Eyes, which features singer-songwriter Conor Oberst and an ever-changing supporting cast, opens the evening’s entertainment.
