Tuesday’s World Series celebration parade for the Kansas City Royals was a stunning affair.
Observers from near and far marveled at the turnout. There were some obstacles, mostly logistical ones for people getting into town for the spectacle. Various reports suggest barely any incidents of crime or wrongdoing.
It was all quite impressive for a gathering of anywhere between 500,000 and 800,000 people downtown.
In all, it cost the city of Kansas City about $350,000.
“We are putting the cost of the parade at $300,000 + $50,000 in overtime and clean-up costs by the City,” Kansas City Manager Troy Schulte tells The Pitch in an e-mail. (Kansas City spokesman Chris Hernandez adds that corporate sponsorships defrayed much of that $300,000 cost.)
So less than a dollar per person to host the biggest party this city’s ever seen?
That’s like hosting a party for 24 of your friends and spending only $15 for a case of Rolling Rock.
(We’ve asked the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority what costs it incurred in transporting parade-goers for free. KCATA spokeswoman Cindy Baker tells us they are pulling those numbers together. We will update this when we hear back.)
