Rogue Wave

Before striking out on his own, singer and guitarist Zach Rogue was a bit player with San Francisco screwballs the Desoto Reds. Out of the Shadow couldn’t be more different from the work of his former cohorts. Originally self-released in 2002, the debut from Rogue’s new foursome, Rogue Wave, is being reissued by Sub Pop as a catchy byproduct of a steady diet of Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel records. The album bubbles with fake British accents, Day-Glo ’60s melodies and a synthetic joy that masks the unlucky-in-love themes of many of its songs. But the best of the lot is a drowsy AM bauble with Belle and Sebastian soul called “Postage Stamp World” that features the droll, lip-smacking chorus In this postage stamp world/You can all get in line/And lick my behind. First up, the Desoto Reds.
