Richard Lloyd

“Monkey,” by Richard Lloyd, from The Radiant Monkey (Parasol Records):

If you’ve ever seen a show at the Record Bar, you owe it to yourself to see Richard Lloyd. The man is best known as the former guitarist for New York proto-punk band Television, and nearly every indie purist and garage revivalist since has ripped off the sparse, spidery style that echoes throughout Marquee Moon. Lloyd may have shared the CBGB stage with three-chord punks like the Ramones, but he has always aspired to technical excellence, lacelike intricacy and solid jams. Lloyd is touring with his Sufimonkey Trio (including original Television drummer Bill Ficca) in support of his latest album, The Radiant Monkey, on which he busts ass as producer and multi-instrumentalist. He’s also previewing songs from his upcoming collection of Jimi Hendrix covers and playing a few classics from his bygone Television days. Grizzled old punks and young lo-fi dweebs alike, pay your respects Friday.
