Rhythm and Lyrics
Located in the Kansas City Jazz District, the Blue Room (1616 East 18th Street, 816-474-8483) is known for its live music. But the historical site regularly plays host to another kind of jam as well — Jazz Poetry Jams. The spoken-word events take place on the third Tuesday of each month and feature various poets. Tonight, poet-in-residence Glenn North and Pellom McDaniels, a professor of history at UMKC and former Kansas City Chief, will get the rhythms flowing. Local poets in the audience are invited to join in and compete during the open-mic portion of the night. And because you wouldn’t expect to visit the Blue Room without hearing some good live music, a jazz band will perform, too. The poetry jam starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.
