Rhoades Out Of the ’70s

Darryl Rhoades is a cool guy. You can tell by the fact that he wears his dark sunglasses onstage at comedy clubs. His long, gray ponytail is indicative of something, too — maybe just that the grizzled old hippie has been around for a long time. Actually, Rhoades, a comedian and musician performing over the next few days in Overland Park at Famous Johnny’s Comedy Club (10635 Floyd, 913-648-5233), does have an interesting history. From 1975 to 1978, he toured with a cross-dressing, comedic musical troupe called the Hahavishnu Orchestra that once appeared in Rolling Stone. Rhoades performed with several funny bands over the following decades, singing lead on novelty tracks such as “She’s a Mortician’s Dream Come True” and “Cowpokin’.” With any luck, he’ll launch into some of those pun-filled, raunchy hits tonight. The laughs start at 8, with additional shows at the same time Thursday and Sunday. Rhoades will also entertain at 7:45 and 9:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
