Elmwood Cemetery needs help from the living.

If anything improves a 5-kilometer walk through Elmwood Cemetery (4900 Truman Road), it’s celebrating the accomplishment by jamming to the Christian rock of Providence afterward. A mere $20 ($30 the day of the race) buys entry into Saturday’s Graveyard 5K Run and Family Walk and goes to improve the cemetery, home to wrestler Bad Boy Brown, big-band leader Jimmie Lunceford and 53 of Harry Truman’s expired relatives. Elmwood’s caretakers need financial help maintaining the 150-year-old, sprawling estate full of ornate mausoleum architecture and more graves bearing Confederate flags than anywhere outside the South. Costumes are encouraged — if we were running through a graveyard at 9 in the morning, we’d feel kind of foolish without one. The sign-up is at 7 a.m.; the run starts at 8. Baseball is Royals third baseman Joe Randa’s career, but tennis is his hobby — one that he’s putting to good use with his Second Annual Grand Slam Tennis Classic. Randa, known as “The Joker” for his ever-present grin, has lured the team’s top talents — slugger Mike Sweeney and pitcher Zack Greinke — and other sports and media personalities to engage in a little netplay to benefit the domestic-abuse shelter Hope House. George Brett, the Royals’ all-time leader in two-base hits, may teach the youngsters something about playing doubles. Meanwhile, broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre can provide running commentary about his own efforts or those of meteorologist Bryan Busby, whose forecast calls for a flurry of forehands.
