Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys take a Hollywood ‘Walk’

This weekend sees the wide release of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, the film based on the 2012 Ben Fountain novel about Iraq War veterans. Directed by Ang Lee, its cast includes Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Steve Martin, Chris Tucker, and the unknown Joe Alwyn as the title character. The film also features tunes from Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys. Hey, we know those guys!

“A man named Bob DePugh at DePugh Music represents our catalog for film and television placement,” Scott Hobart, bandleader of the long-running KC honky-tonk group tells The Pitch. “Always a hoot when these things come through!”

Though Hobart says he hasn’t yet seen the film, he knows which tracks are in it: “Forever Always Ends,” off the Misery Boys’ second album, The Spectacular Sadness Of Rex Hobart And The Misery Boys, and “Gotta Get Back to Forgetting You,” from Empty House, their fourth album.

It’s not the first time the band’s songs have found their way to the movies.

“We also have songs in Tyler Perry’s film, The Family That Preys, and — my personal favorite — Rodney Dangerfield’s last film, Back By Midnight,” Hobart says, adding, “Though our music is barely audible in that one.”

In about a month, on Saturday, December 10, Hobart and the Boys will host their third “sometimes-annual” Skivvy Skrounge at Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club. It’s an underwear-and-toiletries donation drive that benefits the homeless shelter reStart Inc. It’s five bucks at the door with a donation.

The band’s most recent record, Long Shot of Hard Stuff, was released via local label Little Class Records last year.
