Respectable introduction

UPDATE: Aretha Franklin will not perform at this event. Chaka Khan will.

Heck, if she’s good enough for the presidential inauguration, she’s good enough for us. Grammy winner and queen of soul Aretha Franklin performs for the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts’ 1Year2Go Countdown Celebration at the Power & Light District Live Stage (14th Street and Grand), showing that the new center is serious about drawing the popular public to its diverse cultural offerings. When it opens next fall, the Kauffman Center will serve not only as home to the Lyric Opera, the KC Symphony and the KC Ballet but also as host to guest pop, rock, jazz, gospel, country and bluegrass acts, plus world-class touring dance, theater and Broadway productions. By coming out of the gate big with this crowd-pleasing benefit, the center invites everyone to the party. Tickets cost $35; there’s also a $200-a-ticket patrons dinner (chaired by George and Leslie Brett) with priority performance seating. See kauffmancenter.org or call 816-994-7200.— Grace Suh
