Republic High School student loses parking privileges over Confederate flag
The Republic School District — made famous last year for banning books, allegedly making a student rape victim apologize to her attacker, and allegedly abusing a special-needs student — is in the news again for trying to ban something. Reuters reports that this time, Republic High School (Go, Tigers!) officials revoked 16-year-old Riley Collier’s parking privileges for a month for flying a Confederate flag from his truck. Last year, Collier lost his parking privileges for doing the same thing.
Collier trotted out all the classic lines that proponents of the Confederate flag do when they’re told not to fly it. “I’ve always been into the Civil War and Southern history and I recently lived in Mississippi for a year. It’s Southern pride and heritage,” he told Reuters. He also said the flag isn’t racist. His father, Gene, supported Collier, calling him “full-blooded American.” The younger Collier says he’ll stop flying the flag at school after his parking suspension is up.
