Report: paternity of Jovan Belcher’s child questioned

The story surrounding Jovan Belcher’s killing of his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, and himself got even more complicated Friday. The New York Post is reporting that there was some question about paternity of the couple’s baby, Zoey. The paper cites unnamed sources that say Belcher’s mother told police the couple argued about who Zoey’s father was shortly before Belcher shot Perkins nine times in the couple’s home December 1.
The paper quoted somebody within the Chiefs’ organization as saying, “The mother believed that there was an issue over whether [Belcher] was the father.” And, “She said he [believed he] wasn’t necessarily the father of the child.”
A source within the Kansas City Police Department confirmed the paternity dispute to the paper. But an officer told The Post that it isn’t investigating who the baby’s father is, saying it was a civil matter.
If Belcher’s paternity becomes an issue, it could have serious financial ramifications for the 3-month-old baby. According to The Post, Zoey, as Belcher’s beneficiary, would receive $108,000 annually over the next four years, $48,000 the next year and $52,000 each year until she’s 18 or 23, if she goes to college. There is also a $600,000 life-insurance policy and a $100,000 retirement account to be paid out, along with $200,000 for each of the four seasons the linebacker played. Additionally, the Chiefs set up a fund for Zoey.
