Remembering King

We’re deep in the season of campaign rhetoric, so why not use today’s national holiday to remember the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., whose oratory is so frequently emulated and whose message is so often invoked?First, take the kids for some morning fun at the Rockhurst University Convocation Center (54th Street and Troost). The MLK Jr. Youth Day Celebration starts at 9 a.m. and teaches children about King with art- and story-based workshops. Call 816-333-5059 for more information. At 11:30 a.m., head to Epperson Auditorium in Vanderslice Hall (4415 Warwick) at the Kansas City Art Institute for more pensive reflection. Hear a recitation of a famous King speech and stick around for some frank discussion. For information, call 816-802-3435.Both events are free and promise to deepen your perspective on eternal speeches about societal change.
