Reedy-Windy Blues

Only the music genre that fostered timeless hits such as “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” and “Hitch Me to Your Buggy and Drive Me Like a Mule” could get away with something called a “blowoff.” But nothing’s shocking at venerable blues venue B.B.’s Lawnside BBQ (1205 East 85th Street, 816-822-7427). The joint has been simmering slow-cooking blues for 17 years, and it celebrates its anniversary by gathering nine of KC’s windiest mouth harpists to blow the snot out of the joint with backing from Levee Town. The lineup of local harmonica aces spans the new school (Brody Buster and Jimmie Meade) and the older school (Lee McBee, Tulsa Read, Lonesome Hank, Mo Paul, John Paul Drum, Scottyboy Daniel and Tom “Trashmouth” Baker). According to KKFI 90.1 blues jock Connie “Crash” Humiston, “The last time we did something like this, the musicians were just thrilled to death. Jimmie Meade was like, ‘Oh, my god — I get to play with Mo Paul.'” The blow-hardy occasion also celebrates 30 years in radio for Kansas City Blues Show host Lindsay Shannon. So order up a “barbecue sundae” (baked beans, coleslaw and pork layered in a mason jar) and feel the wind let loose from 3 to 7 p.m. this evening.
