Kansas Poet Laureate Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg is a teacher and writer who is fascinated by ecology, whether it involves the natural world or the human one. Several of her 10 books are geared toward self-help through creative expression, and some are books of poetry, including Animals in the House, Lot’s Wife and Reading the Body. She’s also the founder of the transformative language arts program at Goddard College. Stacey Tolbert has been dubbed the “Brown Suga Poet” for writing poetry as cool as Miles Davis. She’s the author of Strangers, Neighbors and Places: The People Poems Collection and Baring My Soul, books of poetry written in what Tolbert calls “worducation,” which suggests street sense and a rhythm akin to bebop. Mirriam-Goldberg and Tolbert read their poetry as part of the Riverfront reading series at 8 tonight at the Writers Place (3607 Pennsylvania, 816-753-1090). Admission is free.
