Random Songs

The thrill of attending a live performance is that it will never happen exactly the same way again. Taking away the set list for a musical revue ups the ante on originality. The Grab Bag Cabaret at Missie B’s (805 West 39th Street, 816-561-0625) puts the set in the hands of the audience — sort of. A singer can’t always count on a crowd to request songs that he or she knows, so vocalists Spencer Brown and Daniel Doss fill a bag with the names of songs they do know, then let audience members select at random. Last time they brought the bag out, Brown worked up Tom Waits’ “Late Evening Prostitute.” The show runs from 8 to 9:30 p.m. There’s no cover, but the entertainers do appreciate tips.
