Royal Welcome
Bring us your horses, your rodeo, your barbecue — and your toga.

9/30-11/19
American Royal CEO George Guastello II still refuses to tell us what went on back in May when rogue barbecuers broke off from the traditional horses-and-meat fest and started the competing Great American Barbecue contest. All he’ll say is that, yes, he went to the other contest, and it was great, and did you know that he has invested in a premiere footing for the animals that includes 25-percent pulverized topsoil and 75-percent specialized sand silt? Way to change the subject, George.

A few new events grace this year’s Royal. The first is Barbecuelooza (are we done yet ending things with looza?), a barbecue contest featuring a restaurant row. And, in homage to Animal House, there’s a Friday Night Toga Party with live music from the Kingsmen and movie alums Otis Day and the Knights.

The agricultural shows that require the pulverized soil run until November 19. See www.americanroyal.com for a complete schedule. — Nadia Pflaum

Football Foodstuff
Kiss the Chief — oops, chef.

FRI 9/30
We haven’t been to any Chiefs games this season, but we have had some disagreeable grill fare. So we recommend the All-American Tailgate cooking class from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (4525 Oak). Cost is $40 for museum members ($60 for nonmembers); call 816-751-1278 for reservations. — Annie Fischer
