Today, celebrate the first full day of spring by witnessing the transformative power of puppets. Sound odd? It shouldn’t. The StoneLion Puppet Theatre, a nationally recognized ensemble of puppeteers with an eye for civic improvement, is hosting A Picnic for the Planet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tony Aguirre Community Center (2050 West Pennway). The puppet masters will join local artists and environmental groups to stage an educational event about Earth’s health, with hands-on art projects, musical performances, a Lakeside Nature Center touch table, urban bird exhibits, education about recycling, special snacks, and the creation of Kansas City’s largest picnic blanket. The blanket will be used in the 11 a.m. puppet show, which promises giant puppets to complement the giant blanket — all to highlight the giant problems facing the planet. The picnic is free; for more information call 816-221-5351.
