Presenting your local 2014 Record Store Day Black Friday guide

There’s some pretty delicious stuff on this Black Friday edition list of Record Store Day exclusives. And if you’re not one of the unfortunate souls camping outside of Macy’s in the wee hours on Friday, November 28, well, maybe try your luck in one of the local record stores. (You’ll probably have a bit more in common with your fellow music nerds than with the crazy lady who needs every color snuggie, anyway.) To make the day easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of local shops and their special offerings.

Love Garden Sounds

10 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Lawrence’s Love Garden will be keeping normal business hours on Friday. Owner Kelly Corcoran has this good-natured disclaimer: “Black Friday already has bad retail connotations. We do this to have the records people want, as a stand-alone approach. Our MO is just to make sure we have the records people want. No elbows.” Check the Facebook event page for updates on what exclusive releases Love Garden will be carrying.

Mills Record Company

8 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Mills Record Company boasts a veritable goody bag of fun on Black Friday: Expanded hours, RSD exclusives (thanks to Facebook, we already know MRC got some St. Vincent joy in), the musical stylings of DJ Thundercutz (starting at 2 p.m.), live sets from Monta At Odds (7 p.m.) and Troglodyte (9 p.m.) and “massive ticket giveaways” to a few Midland shows. Details here

Vinyl Renaissance

11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

At press time, Vinyl Renaissance is still firming up its plans for Record Store Day. An associate at the Kansas City location said that the store would “probably” open an hour early, at 10 a.m. An associate at the two-week-old Columbia store said that there is some discussion of opening early, as well as discussion of live local bands. These details should be set by the end of this weekend, so check the Vinyl Renaissance Facebook – Kansas City, Columbia and Overland Park – for details.

Records with Merritt

8 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Records with Merritt is expanding its hours on Friday, in addition to hosting seven local bands providing some live music ear candy. The full lineup: The Daddyo’s, Who & the Fucks, Cucumber & the Suntans, Extremely Naked, Fake Fancy, Merlin, Mr. & the Mrs. Bands start at noon. See the Facebook event page for details.

7th Heaven

8 a.m. – 9 p.m.

7th Heaven is opening two hours early for Black Friday. No live music scheduled, but if you’re the type who wants to shop in peace, that might not matter to you. Details here

Zebedee’s RPM

11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

While Zebedee’s doesn’t participate in the official Black Friday RSD craziness – they won’t be carrying any special releases or adjusting their hours – but they will be doing a store-wide sale, so pop in for extra deals.
