Lawrence’s futuracana band Hello Biplane releases their new album, how to hold a bug, on Friday, March 27. The alt/indie/folk-pop band is based around the songwriting of Spencer Goertz-Giffen and Braden Young, who are partners both in music and in life, and their latest release is exactly the sound of spring taking hold.

As the band themselves describe their music, “Hello Biplane’s songs nod to life’s fleeting moments – passing quickly but leaving something lasting in their wake.” The warmth and comfort generated by the band’s music is augmented by powerful instrumentation which pushes their roots-based sound beyond simple strummed chords.

The next single from how to hold a bug is “Balloon,” which drops tomorrow, but we’re excited to premiere the video for it here, replete with sunny excursions and (of course) balloons. Check it out below and then read the band’s explanation of how it came to be.

“We basically just shot this video in an afternoon with the equipment we had on hand. We got some balloons from Balloon Arts in Lawrence and filmed in various locations. We used a fishing pole attached to the balloons to get the floating and fly away shots, and also to avoid littering. Lyrically, this song is about raising kids, watching them learn/trying your best to teach them/having difficulties and joy throughout. The song/video is just fun, though, so hopefully captures some of that childlike joy and wonder that comes along with new experiences.”

Hello Biplane’s how to hold a bug is available Friday, March 27 on vinyl, CD, and digital, and you can pre-order it here. Their album release shows are Saturday, March 28, at the Bottleneck with The Roseline and Thighmastr and Friday, April 10, at The Brick with The Kansas City Bear Fighters and The Creepy Jingles.
