Premiere: GBD’s debut single is a post-punk joyride of impending doom
Kansas City post-rockers GBD formed in 2019, a time which meant that for the first two years of the band’s existence, they were barely able to rehearse, much less perform live.
Since 2021, the original trio of Jesse Dummermuth (guitar), David Lassman (bass), and David Walker (drums) focused primarily on writing and recording “dynamic and diverse instrumental songs with epically spooky vibes.”
In 2024, Kayla (aka Thansui) joined as vocalist and frontwoman, and while the spooky vibes and dynamic instrumentation is still there, the now quartet that is GBD has evolved into a live act. The recording and live performances combine this coming Thursday, April 3, when GBD celebrates the release of their debut single, “I Can’t Take This Anymore,” with a show at Sk8bar with Violets Are Blue and Kissy Fit.
Ahead of the single’s official release, we’re happy to premiere it here. We’ll let GBD describe it for you, and you can take a listen below:
“”I Can’t Take It Anymore” has a creeping sense of danger to it. A stumbling beat with bass and guitar that pressures you to move. Even the vocals feel like they’re leading you to the edge of a cliff in the dead of night. The lyrics reflect the thoughts of a person burning, literally. The guitar hypnotizes, and the rhythm section is unpredictable. Kayla’s vocals are not what you’d expect from this kind of post-punk rock joyride. It’s killer, even though the entire song is lamenting about boiling and melting. Impending doom feels like a theme we can all relate to.”
GBD plays Sk8bar on Thursday, April 3, with Violets Are Blue and Kissy Fit. Details on that show here.
