Platte Party

Farmers pray for rain. The Platte County Fair organizers pray for mud. The Mud Marathon — where all kinds of vehicles race around a circular track with knee-deep mud sucking at their tires — is the signature event of the 147th annual county fair (15730 Fairgrounds Road, Platte City). The 4-H exhibit halls, carnival, and petting zoo open today at 4 p.m. The Mud Marathon is saved for 6 p.m Friday, July 23. Even if you can’t get there until Saturday, July 24, you can still knock back drinks at the Dirty Shame Saloon and then scarf some fried dough while watching the queen of the county fair get crowned. Daily admission is $10. Diehards can get a season pass for $30. For more information, see plattecountyfair.com or call 816-431-3247.
