Planting Roots

In the song “Work,” Bob Marley sings about the weekly grind while encouraging unity and a brighter tomorrow. In the spirit of this positive outlook comes today’s Roots Family Reunion at the Madrid Theatre (3810 Main). The event is like a music festival and a business convention rolled together, with the overall goals of strengthening local commerce and supporting Midwest reggae, soul and positive hip-hop. Regional musicians, artists, club owners, promoters, vendors and music fans are invited to meet, share ideas and build relationships in a musical environment. The music starts with KKFI 90.1’s Sista G spinning reggae, followed by DJ Tony B’s dance selections. Then come live performances by Karly Roots, 77 Jefferson, Deep Thinkers, Brother of Moses, Lynard D. Stroy and others. The daylong event is for adults 21 and older and runs from 6 p.m. to midnight. Entry costs $10; $15 gets you a Caribbean-style buffet. Drinks are available from a cash bar. Get advance tickets at the Island Spice Caribbean Restaurant (10 West 39th Street). Call organizer Lynne Anderson at 816-914-3792 for more information.
