Pistol Pete & Popgun Paul

Described as a “gay Everly Brothers” — or you could say a gayer Everly Bros. — Pistol Pete & Popgun Paul have come out of the closet to make front-porch music. With a decidedly vaudevillian take on folk, gospel, and blues, this acoustic duo has done well to uphold the title of “wise-ass troubadours of modern love.” Formed in New Orleans, PP & PP have managed to generate equal enthusiasm whether entertaining audiences at jazz clubs, Irish pubs, or drag shows. Popgun Paul apparently spent his post-college days as a street musician in the French Quarter while regaling passersby with his tales of being a former drag queen and church pianist — separately, that is. Pistol Pete has put his master’s degree in English to use; his lyrics (easily discernible on the band’s excellent new disc, Son of a Gun) are a genuinely witty improvement over the trying-to-be-artsy pap most often heard in acoustic settings. Together, the two are unstoppable. Sharing the bill is KC favorite Kristie Stremel, who is also quite handy with guitar and voice.
