Lone Jack wants to keep its battlefield on the map.

A bloody Civil War battle was fought in Lone Jack, Missouri, and locals aren’t about to let you forget it. The 1862 fight, which killed more than 200 people and left much of Lone Jack in ashes, remains a presence there — in the Civil War cemetery, in the museum artifacts and in the battlefield trenches full of soldiers’ bones. But the Friends of Historic Lone Jack aren’t resting. The organization stages battle re-enactments, publishes a newsletter, and fights to preserve its hallowed acreage because, as its Web site notes, “Every ten minutes an acre of Civil War battlefield is lost.” Each year, it calls for volunteers to help maintain the battleground and museum with a little spring cleaning. This Saturday, concerned citizens who want to help out the National Park Service’s endangered site can show up with rakes, shovels, mops and such to tend the cemetery, plant flowers and scour surfaces.
