Wednesday, March 19

On Wednesday, Trey Anastasio delivered an intimate solo acoustic performance at Kansas City’s Uptown Theater, showcasing his versatility and deeper connection with followers than one would see at a Phish show. The evening began with “Free,” from Phish’s Billy Breathes album, setting a relaxed and intimate tone for the evening before seamlessly transitioning through a musical showcase spanning his extensive career.

Midway through the set, he surprised us with an acoustic rendition of “Kill Devil Falls,” marking its first solo acoustic performance since July 2021, and the loyal Phish fans broke silence and roared as they recognized the surprise. Anastasio also performed another rarity, “Let Me Lie,” from his 2006 solo album Bar 17, which hadn’t been played solo since 2016.

The show’s second set highlighted Anastasio’s improvisational prowess with an impromptu acoustic solo further demonstrating his talent, including heartfelt versions of “Bug” and “What’s the Use?” leaving the audience in awe of his musical depth. This performance exemplified Anastasio’s ability to reinterpret his work in an orderly and acoustic setting, a memorable experience, especially if you’re used to the entrancing nonsense that is Phish.
