The Uptown
Friday, February 9
There’s a reason this hit funk rock band has been in movies, quoted, shouted, and praised throughout the years. Having originated in Minneapolis, both Morris and Jellybean Johnson grew up, and played, with none other than Prince himself. The night roared with nonstop funky beats that had the crowd just as hype. Their contagious smiles beamed against the disco ball. When Jerome brought out the mirror hysteria erupted and Morris admired what we the audience got to see all night: his beauty, grace, elegance, and talent—and that FRESH wave.
Performing without a setlist, Morris Day and the Time rolled out the classics, including a “Purple Rain” cover, with animated dances and constant excitement. It truly was a primal expression of affection both for and from the audience.
Jass R. Couch—Slikc (drums), Jeff Johnson (bass), Clarence Copridge (keys), and Carlton Rashad (backing vocals)—opened for Morris Day and the Time with an impressive cover of boogie funk. Throughout the night Jess talked and joked with the audience then responded to their call outs with gratitude and humor. This Kansas City based band poured their out as their angelic and empowering songs aerated the venue.
