Having formed in 1969, established band Little Feat is known for their eclectic style that blends rock, blues, country, R&B, and jazz. The band has rightfully earned their reputation for innovation, as their hypnotic sound is characterized by complex rhythms, tight musicianship, and George Lowell’s songwriting legacy. Little Feat stopped in Kansas City on their Can’t Be Satisfied tour promoting their newest album, Sam’s Place, which features covers of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Willie Dixon in addition to electric new songs.
Opening for Little Feat wouldn’t be an appropriate description, as Marc Broussard’s set felt more like that of a co-headliner than an opening act. Thursday night in Kansas City started out funky and led into a James Brown cover. The keys player also played the saxophone, sometimes simultaneously. This soulful R&B blues band original songs has been said to “make people pregnant” as Marc reluctantly shared with the crowd. He also told a story to the beat of a blues tune about Johnny Taylor’s version of “I’d Rather Drink Muddy Water” then dipped right into it, which included bass and sax solos that left the crowd screaming. Their 50 min “opening” set was unmatched.
