Spencer & Rains were the first of 4 acts for a mighty fine way to spend Sunday morning: with bluegrass, brunch, & brews. Spencer & Rains are traditionally a musical duo: Tricia Spencer and Howard Rains. For Kaw River Roots Brunch, they brought on several accomplished musicians. Specializing in old-time music, they are both fiddlers, guitar players, and singers with a deep commitment to preserving and performing traditional music from their respective home states: Kansas and Texas. Known for their distinctive twin fiddling and vocal harmonies, they have produced several albums including “The Old Texas Fiddle” series. Their work incorporates visual art, providing an immersive and interactive show.
I could describe bluegrass bands all day but none compare to Shakedown Strings, a trio string Grateful Dead band that infuses traditional bluegrass with a psychedelic twist. Shakedown Strings blended intricate melodies and harmonies with spirited rhythms on Sunday for Kaw River Roots’ Bluegrass Brunch.
The opening notes of their version of “Women Smarter” had a girl screaming louder than the music (It was me. Sorry not sorry). Patti Steel joined the band and played a mean clarinet as spinners, sinners, and swayers alike danced to their unique and eclectic sound. Don’t just take my word for it: to accentuate the energy of Dead & Company at The Sphere, Shakedown Strings were personally invited to play official pre- and after-parties through July 11-13.
