After debuting just a year ago, the five-member girl group Young Posse embarked on a 15-city U.S. tour, with Kansas City’s Gem Theater marking their third stop on Monday, Oct. 28.

The group is made up of Sunhye, Yeonjung, Jiana, Doeun, and Jieun. Unfortunately, due to being sick, Jiana was unable to attend the KC show. With a core hip-hop concept, Young Posse brings a fresh vibe to the new generation of K-Pop. On Monday night, the group showcased songs from their EPs, along with covers of favorite artists, to highlight each member’s unique style.

The group opened with “POSSE UP!”—a hip-hop drill track from their debut album that radiated energy and spotlighted their dance skills. The use of drill style—especially for a K-Pop group—sets Young Posse apart from their peers. It was a surprising choice to kick off the show with this track, as I had expected to hear this later in their setlist, though it set an energetic tone for the rest of the night.

After more group songs, the concert transitioned to solo stages, giving each member a moment to reveal different musical influences. My favorite stage was Jieun’s cover of Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi,” which contrasted with the group’s usual vibe, though it suited her vocal style perfectly. The solo sets were followed by a group cover of Miguel’s “Sure Thing,” showcasing a smooth R&B sound that has yet to appear in their discography.

In an intermission, the group answered fan questions submitted on sticky notes posted on a whiteboard. Some notes were filled with supportive messages, encouragement, and well-wishes for the tour. A few fans asked if they’d tried Kansas City BBQ, and the members shared that they’d enjoyed some the night before. When they asked the audience for more local dining suggestions, one fan humorously suggested Cane’s.

The night concluded with “ATE THAT”—the title track from their third EP of the same name. It was impressive to see how stable their vocals remained even after intense choreography. The group’s energy was contagious, and they delivered a performance that left the crowd buzzing. I couldn’t help but think, ironically, they really ate that. Young Posse has established themselves as a rising act to watch, and it’s exciting to think about what they might have in store next.
