Oh dear. I fear I was not prepared for my first Andy Frasco show.
Looking at the photos alone, you’d think this was a metal band, but Andy’s message of radical self-love is expressed through beautifully detailed and intimate jams that only ever picked up in speed. I knew he had a funky jazz-rock thing going on; that was my only context. Before the first note, the guitar player, Shawn Eckels, jumped in one motion onto the piano and raised his hands in the air, bringing the crowd to a collective roar, then leaped off.
Extra Gold made the trek from Denver to frontman Evan Holm’s hometown, Kansas City on Thursday night. This honky-tonk revival band kicked off the night with gritty, boot-stomping rhythms with rock & roll swagger. A setlist full of originals also included an energetic full-throttle cover of Eddie Rabbitt’s “Drivin’ My Life Away.” With pedal steel wails, Hammond B3 swells, and a rhythm section that could shake the walls of any backroad bar.
Kris Lager Band set the stage with an unforgettable performance at The Truman opening for Andy Frasco & The U.N. From the first note, the band’s liveliness brought a certain electricity through the crowd. Kris, Jeremiah Weir (keyboards and percussion), John Fairchild (percussion), and Brandon Miller (bass guitar) seamlessly blended blues rock with country influences as their charismatic and boisterous stage presence, grave vocals, and sly smiles had the audience engaged from the start.
